Importance of E.Q and N.Q rather than I.Q

A lot of people believe that IQ is the foundation of success.

We prize intelligence in our society but there are two other quotients, or factors, that determine success, often far more than IQ.

E.Q. EQ refers to your Emotional Quotient or emotional intelligence. On the site Saleshacker, they define EQ as “people’s ability to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions and those of others.” And they explain it includes five competencies including things like self-awareness, empathy, and self-regulation.

Humans live and work in groups. In any field, even science (where you might picture someone working in a lab by themselves) there is collaboration. Being able to communicate with and relate to people at work, at home, and in society is a huge key to success.

N.Q. NQ refers to your No-Quotient. It’s the number of times you are willing to hear “no” and be rejected and keep going. We also call this your F.Q., or failure quotient. Inventors and innovators all have high FQ’s. They understand that in order to reach success, they must go through massive failure.

When you get rejected what do you do?

How do you respond? Do you give up after a couple of rejections? Do you believe that “no” means never or just not yet?

When you fail what do you do?

Do you believe you should stop? Are you ashamed and think that you are a failure? Or do you see it as what it really is? Simply part of the process of reaching success.

Salespeople and entrepreneurs who have high NQ’s are the people that are resilient and persistent. They keep moving forward.

They don’t let a few no’s keep them from reaching their goals and dreams.

They recognize that you can’t get more success in life by avoiding failure and rejection. They move through those things. (The good news is, you can improve your NQ by learning to Go for No!)

Daniel Goleman who wrote the book, Emotional Intelligence, said this, “Even though a high IQ is no guarantee of prosperity, prestige, or happiness in life, our schools and our culture fixate on academic abilities, ignoring the emotional intelligence that also matters immensely for our personal destiny.”

So, it would be in your best interest to not fixate on your IQ and instead build a strong EQ and NQ
